If you think animals in Heaven is a stretch, how about ghosts here on earth? The PetGazette received these photos with a letter from Wayne Schnaibel several months ago. Adding to the spookiness, Schnaibel happens to be an employee of Precious Pets Cemetery in Spencer.

In the letter, he told of burying his 15-year-old lab mix Sister there in June 1996. Two months later, he returned to the plot with a gift–the wooden cutout in the lower half of the photo–which was a present on what would have been her birthday. He took a photo of the cutout, seeing nothing out of the ordinary until he looked at the photo.

In the original photo, you can easily see the faint image of a dog in the upper right hand corner. And darned if it doesn't look like a lab. The next photo he took showed a yellow glow where the dog had been. How can this be? We don't know.

Schnaibel says matter of factly, "Sister came back to visit me on her birthday to let me know she was all right."

The photo was interesting, but we just didn't know what to do with it–is Schnaibel on the level, or is it a hoax? Is this merely an odd natural phenomenon? Will people think we're nutty for running it? We called some associates for their opinions, and reactions ranged from skeptical to laughter. So we put the photo aside and (frankly, Wayne) hoped you wouldn't wonder why we were ignoring you.

But an interesting thing happened when we started contemplating ideas for National Pet Memorial Day. We showed the photo to the associates. When they saw it (as opposed to hearing about it), they were fascinated. Likewise with some vet clinic employees who saw it. And we concluded that Schnaibel wasn't the type to pull a hoax. Well then, maybe we did have something, something curious enough to let the readers in on it.

We just present the evidence. You will have to decide for yourselves. Newspaper people are the original skeptics. To be honest, we're not convinced ghosts of any kind exist–but the photos do make us wonder.
