Answers Your Grooming Questions

By Debe Richards-Hamm

Q Dear Aunt Debe:
What would you suggest as the best “hairdo” for a VERY fluffy cockapoo? I have a new baby cockapoo (mostly poo), and she’s quite fluffy with lots of tearstains. Our climate here on the central California coast is pretty mild all year long. Any suggestions? I would like for her to look neat, and be easy to clean when she plays outside (we’re near the beach, with LOTS of damp sand).

Thanks so much, Jayne

A Dear Jayne:
You say your cockapoo looks mostly poodle and not cocker spaniel. With the information you’ve given me about your climate and the tearstains, I’m inclined to suggest a kennel clip. Some call it a clean clip. The style is a shaved face and feet with short body and leg hair. The topknot and tail are left longer and rounded in appearance. This would be a very practical style for your circumstances, and it’s easy upkeep. I suggest visiting the groomer every four to six weeks to maintain the style.
