Adopting a pet in Oklahoma
Municipal shelters, humane societies and rescues all adopt out animals, and each runs its own process. Knowing what to ask makes the visit shorter.
- Decide what suits your home: size, energy, other pets, children and the hours you are away.
- Find places near you with the finder on the home page, then check each place's own listings before you travel.
- Ask about fees, what is included (spay or neuter, vaccines, microchip) and the return policy.
- Meet the animal more than once if you can, and bring your own dog to any meeting with a dog.
- Prepare supplies, find a vet and register the microchip in your name on the day.
- Give the animal a quiet first week with few visitors.
A state license does not make a shelter better or worse. It means the place is on the state list. Where we know it, the listing shows a Licensed stamp.
