Rehoming a pet in Oklahoma
If you can no longer keep a pet, there is usually more than one way to do it well. Calling ahead matters, because many shelters have waiting lists.
- Ask family and friends first. A known home is the least stressful move for the animal.
- Call rescues and shelters near you and ask if they take surrenders, if there is a wait and if there is a fee. Many places say no, or only for animals from their own county.
- Gather vaccination and vet records, microchip details and a short note on habits, health and temperament.
- If you rehome it yourself, meet adopters in person, ask for references and use a written agreement. Do not give a pet away for free to anyone you have not met.
- Keep the pet in your care until the new home is settled. Update the microchip registration after the handover.
The finder on the home page filters to places that list surrenders. Their rules change, so call before you drive.
