Found a stray dog or cat in Oklahoma
Most strays have a home looking for them. The steps below give the owner the best chance of finding the animal, and protect you if you end up keeping it.
- If the animal looks hurt, call a vet or the nearest animal control office before anything else.
- Look for a collar, tag or microchip. Any vet or shelter can scan for a chip, usually free.
- Call animal control or the shelter for the town or county where you found it and file a found report. Hold times and who takes strays vary, so ask.
- Take clear photos and post them on local lost and found pages, neighborhood apps and at nearby vets. Leave out one detail only the owner would know.
- Keep the animal apart from your own pets and note where and when it was found.
- Do not rehome it until the hold period has passed and you have asked the office what its process is.
Use the finder on the home page to see which offices near you take found animals. Holding authority is estimated for many counties, so confirm by phone.
