Working dogs and prison dog programs
Some dogs are trained by incarcerated handlers, and others are trained for work. These programs vary by state and by year, so treat this page as a starting point, not a directory.
- Ask the shelter or rescue directly whether it works with a training program. Many do not.
- Ask what training a dog has had, and what it has not. A trained dog still needs time to settle in your home.
- Ask whether a trainer or the program offers follow-up help after adoption.
- Keep in mind that a working dog usually needs a job. Be honest about how much exercise and company you can give.
We list no program dogs in this guide, because we could not confirm any current list. To look for a dog, use the finder on the home page and ask each place.
